milkd – maylands

We’d been experiencing a lot of bad luck with finding caffeine hits over the festive period. It seemed almost every cafe had gone fishing. A drive by of Sherbet proved fruitless but our luck eventually turned. The new Milkd cafe was bucking the trend and was open. We easily got tables – turns out Perth’s cafénistas skipped town too!

Milkd’s a simplistic cafe with a bay window overlooking Eighth Avenue. We got a table by the long leather bench and pushed two tables together. The brekkie menu doesn’t exactly challenge the status quo, but a well cooked breakfast is all we are looking for. Good service, good prices, Milkd certainly delivers.

As we read through alternative magazines and wait for our food, people start to pour into the cafe. I guess the cafénistas had a sleep in. The coffee here is quite good, if a little weak. Our food soon arrives, and I’m sure the table next door has food envy as I hear mutters of ‘Oh, I should’ve ordered that!!’.

My mum’s Milkd plate is overflowing with slices of sour dough, chunky italian sausage, eggs, sauteed portobello mushrooms, bacon, slices of feta and tomato. There’s goes the diet! My sister’s brekkie has thick slices of italian sausage, grilled field mushrooms, two perfectly poached eggs and sour dough, with baby rocket spilling over.

My salmon and eggs look gorgeous. Soft and shivering scrambled eggs are piled upon New Norcia sourdough bread (which has been well primed with butter) and slices of smoked salmon and rocket. I love the scrambled eggs – soft but cohesive, the creamy eggs pair well with the rocket. My only two whinges are the discovery of a weed amongst the rocket salad, and the excessive salt which had been ground on the dish by the kitchen, rendering the already salty salmon partly inedible.

The two other dishes were pretty good, with the italian sausage a winner.

We left pretty content – but smelling a lot like bacon throughout the whole day of post Christmas sales shopping. I think Milkd may need better ventilation?

Up’s: Well priced, friendly service and laidback atmosphere.
Down’s: Weedy rocket salad… Smelling like breakfast for the whole day was really unappealing.

I recently visited the Milkd in North Perth and had a pretty nice breakfast, though luckily was not cursed with bacon-stench for the rest of the day. I hope you didn’t pick up any stray dogs. Or drunkards.
