good one bbq – victoria park

An mom and pop business located on the Albany Highway strip, this restaurant always does a brisk trade in takeaway boxes of luscious roast duck and sweet, charred barbeque pork. You can recognise the Good One by the row of shiny ducks and white cooked chickens hanging in the window, waving to the passing traffic with their little wings.

Besides great barbequed meats (as their name suggests), at night the kitchen pumps out decent a la carte dishes. I like the service here – it’s quick and efficient, never pushy. The restaurant is bare bones, a narrow, rectangular space lit with fluoros. A swinging saloon door separates the kitchen from the dining room, but we come for the food, not the decor. And so do many others – this place is full house at 7.30 on a Friday night.

From the top – hot and sour soup, golden mushroom with beef claypot and shredded duck with dried scallop soup.

Their shredded duck and dried scallop soup is a flavour sensation. The duck fat gives the soup a velvety texture, the scallop adds roundness and the scatted dropped eggs adds silkiness. Basically, it’s just really tasty.

Despite its name, when we ordered the beef tendon claypot, there was no actual tendon in it (which leads me to believe it has been misnamed on the menu). What came out instead was a metal bowl generously filled with beef brisket, a melt in your mouth braise, with a hint of fragrant spices. Anti-tendon folks are missing out!

Golden fried squid in salted egg yolk batter

I can never resist seafood deep fried in a batter of salted egg yolk – the salted egg yolk adds a fine, almost grainy texture to the golden batter. I know the notion of a salted egg is a bit strange, but the texture is the opposite of inoffensive and if you didn’t know it was in the batter, you’d think the batter was miraculously fantastic. The Good One BBQ does a squid version of this and though a tad oily, I love biting down through the crunchy coating to the milky white, tender squid.

Good One BBQ is never going to win a Michelin star – this is not first class Chinese food, but good quality chinese for when you need to get out of the kitchen and need it good and fast.

Apart from that, the menu has enough variety to keep us entertained plus the lure of the glossy meats in the window will always have us back.

Up’s: Reliable, consistent Chinese food. Quick, efficient service. Good barbeque meats.
Down’s: No frills decor.

Food: 4/5 (extra credit for being so consistent)
Value: 3.5/5
Service: 3/5
Atmosphere: 3/5
