When anyone says waffles in Perth, it’s synonymous with an ice cream chain, so it’s always good to have a new player on the field. Everyone, say hello to Superstar Waffles.
Like all seemingly new things in Perth, Superstar Waffles is hidden in an alleyway. It’s in Arcade 189, just a few metres from the Horseshoe Bridge. In contrast to its slight grungy neighbours, Superstar has clean, Muji inspired decor that’s both sensible and charming. It’s minimal and as soon as you walk in, those serious waffle makers will catch your eye. One is for Belgian waffles and the other for waffles on a stick. Yes on a stick!
We tried the s’mores waffle (going through a marshmallow phase at the moment) which was quite good. True to its name the waffle was sandwiched with molten marshmallow fluff, graham cracker crumbs and melted chocolate. If that doesn’t sound sweet enough, there’s a shot glass of mini marshmallows on the side and to even it out, whipped cream. Superstar’s waffles are little more on the yeasty, chewy side and that’s not a bad thing. The wholesome texture reminds you that this is not a commercially perfected product.
The coffee here is good too. Notably they have siphon coffee and a range of interesting drinks like green tea and taro frappes. There’s an ease to this place that I really like. Waffle lovers, do check it out.
